Speed Reading

Speed Reading is a vital skill in tackling the information explosion of the modern world.

The Speed Reading World Championship was the dream of polymath, speaker and author Tony Buzan and is the culmination of some 40 odd years of research into the brain and its potential. Tony Buzan said, “Reading is to the mind as aerobic training is to the body.”

His Master Trainers, Elaine Colliar and Phil Chambers worked with Tony Buzan himself to manage and invigilate at the Championship since its inception in 1997 and have also worked with partners to stage events in Europe and Asia.

This Championship continues their common commitment to "Global Mental Literacy"

Why Online?

This year we have decided to move the World Speed Reading Championship online to make it truly available to everyone who wishes to compete globally - and not just those who can afford to travel to far-flung destinations.

We have had a disappointing few years with "live competitions" where we felt that the quality and integrity of the Championships were less than ideal.

Upon consultation with our Competitors we understand more than ever that the transparent operation of a competition, the quality of the arbiters and the robust marking scheme would be better managed by our global arbiting team and not a third-party team in another country.

The Championship will now be run in multiple languages and multiple time zones on an annual basis!

Our competitors talked - we are delivering this for you! .

What does the Competition Consist of?

There is just one discipline in the World Speed Reading Championship as detailed below.

This discipline is marked by a trained cohort of International Level One Arbiters under supervision of Senior GOMSA Arbiters globally

Full marking scheme and rules for the Championship are provided to all competitors and arbiters in advance in our publication "The Competitor's and Arbiter's Speed Reading Handbook (How to be a World Champion)".

Timing

The championship will be segmented by continent with each time zone starting at approximately 09:30 local time.

Competitors have a maximum on two hours of reading time, however the aim of the championship is to read as fast as possible, so each competitor is digitally timed individually.

They are given the comprehension questions immediately after finishing their reading and have a further 30 minutes to answer them.

Text

The chosen book will be an unpublished, fictional novel. This ensures competitors cannot apply previous knowledge. Details of the title or author will not be released before the competition.

It will be delivered digitally via our championship platform.

Translations into different languages are available on request. Please note translation will be done by skilled individuals, not automated artificial intelligence. This is to guarantee readability and quality of the text. We urge competitors register as soon as possible to allow translations to be sourced..

Questions

Notes may be made during reading phase and referred to whilst answering the questions but the book cannot be used after reading time has been declared.

The comprehension test consists of 20 questions, set by the author. The passages to which these refer are approximately evenly spaced throughout the book. They are detailed and require one or two sentences to answer (not multiple choice). Questions refer to specific events or facts revealed in the book and not the reader's subjective opinions..
